Ever tried a new product that made you smell like a walking potpourri, but your skin instantly rejected it by throwing a tantrum? You’re not alone; it turns out, our skin isn’t always thrilled with the ‘eau de flower bomb’ energy that some skincare products carry. Let’s learn from the experts about why you need to invest in fragrance-free skincare and how, in many subtle ways, it affects your system.
The science of sensitivity
Did you know fragrances are among the leading causes of skin irritation and allergies in skincare products? Dr. Maya Shahsavari, Medical Director at Ouronyx Dubai, rightfully points out how these reactions often manifest as contact dermatitis, characterised by redness, itching, and inflammation.
Even if you look beyond the immediate reactions, the skin barrier (our body’s protective shield) gets heavily compromised by fragrant chemicals. “The stratum corneum, the uppermost layer of the human epidermis, forms the epidermal permeability barrier,” explains Dr. Lola Ali, skincare expert at Euromed Clinic Dubai. “This protective layer is composed of fatty acids and ceramides, alongside other lipids. When disrupted, issues such as dryness, redness, and accelerated ageing can occur.”
Smart brands tune in
Beauty brands like Summer Fridays are prioritising fragrance-free formulations, as they recognise the legitimacy of these concerns. Founders Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Ireland, on the importance of this approach and creating skincare that works for all skin types, especially the most sensitive. “Our skincare ethos at Summer Fridays is that products should be both effective and gentle. For those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema, avoiding added fragrance can help reduce the risk of irritation. Fragrance can sometimes trigger sensitivity, especially when the skin barrier is compromised due to things like weather changes or over-exfoliation. That’s why maintaining and protecting the skin barrier is so essential. And if you’re doing in-office treatments or incorporating activities into your routine, our products are designed to be gentle, complementary, and barrier-supportive.”
The hidden impact
With science-cited details, Dr. Ali further elaborates, “Fragrances, those complex blends of organic molecules—esters, aldehydes, alcohols—are pervasive in our daily lives, as highlighted by Biniecka and Caroli’s 2011 research, demonstrating the constant contact our skin has with them. However, this daily exposure isn’t without its risks. As Steinemann’s 2019 study indicates, a significant portion of the population, specifically 9.1%, reports skin issues directly linked to common fragrance exposure.”
Beyond skin deep
The impact of fragranced products extends beyond skin health. “For individuals with respiratory sensitivities, such as asthma, scented products can exacerbate symptoms, leading to headaches, dizziness, and respiratory discomfort. Certain fragrance ingredients, particularly phthalates, have also been associated with hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues,” explains Dr. Shahsavari. Furthermore, many fragrance compounds aren’t biodegradable, contributing to environmental pollution and disrupting aquatic ecosystems.
Making informed choices
When it comes to reading the ingredients list on the products you purchase, Dr. Ali’s advice is to pay extra attention to the details. “It is essential to be cautious of products with harsh ingredients such as fragrances, as they can damage the skin barrier and impair its function. Additionally, essential oils and citrus extracts, which are commonly used in fragrances, can cause irritation and inflammation.”
While opting for fragrance-free skincare may seem like a small change, in the long run, it’s an investment in your skin’s well-being.
